During the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2017 Mark rowed solo across the Atlantic Ocean in his full-carbon rowing boat Peanuts. He rowed, all by himself, from La Gomera (Canary Islands) to English Harbour Antigua in 30 days, 7 hours and 49 minutes. Mark rowed with an average speed of 3.503 knots. He finished as the first solo rower and crushed the world record with 5 days. Of all participants Mark finished 4th, behind three 4-men boats (only 17 hours after boat number 1), leaving all other 3-men, 2-men and solo rowers behind. The second solo rower finished 14 days (!) after Mark finished. All around the world Mark's achievement, resulting in the official Guinness Book of Records, was mentioned referring to him as the 'Gentle Giant' and 'The Flying Dutchman'.
Mark's participation in the TWAC was linked to his charity, row4cancer. His mother is severely ill. With Mark's row4cancer charity he raised funds for the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Foundation enabling better access to expensive medicines for treatment of cancer. The aimed amount of Euro 50.000 has not been reached yet, currently Euro 44.000 has been raised.
‘Nothing is impossible’ so Mark continues to reach the Euro 50.000 goal. Do you want to help Mark and the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Foundation? Please make your donation here and contribute!
